Kodokan Judo 

Judo is the way to the most effective use of both physical and spiritual strength. By training you in attacks and defenses it refines your body and your soul and helps you make the spiritual essence of Judo a part of your very being. In this way you are able to perfect yourself and contribute something of value to the world. This is the final goal of Judo discipline. 

Jigoro Kano, Founder of Judo

Our Mission

Judo was developed in Japan in the year 1882 by Jigoro Kano. Kano was an educator, as well as a practitioner of jujitsu. Sensei Kano took techniques from several martial arts, combining western wrestling and new concepts in physical education and spiritual training. The resulting martial art form that he developed was called Judo, or “The Gentle Way”.

The JBBAH

The Judo Black Belt Association of Hawaii is a local affiliate of the United States Judo Federation and is
dedicated to bringing together a variety of Judo Clubs in Hawaii for the continued development progress
and development of our clubs, our instructors, our competitors, and all of our members. 

We are dedicated to supporting local Judo students by assisting in travel to mainland and foreign
tournaments, and to bringing world-class instructors to Hawaii. 

The Judo Black Belt Association of Hawaii, founded in 1929, was the first Yudanshakai (Judo Black Belt
Association) established outside of Japan.

The Oahu Interschoolastic Association (OIA), comprised of Oahu's public schools, has sponsored competitive high school judo since 1972. The ILH, comprised of Oahu's private schools, as well as the schools on the Big Island, have just this year begun their Judo interscholastic program. We hope to see this increase the popularity of Judo and the number of Judo practitioners in Hawaii.
